Environment & Society

As a heavy-industry enterprise, VARD is subject to extensive and changing laws and regulations designed to protect the environment. These include laws and regulations relating to air and water quality, imposing limitations on discharge of pollutants into the environment and establishing standards for treatment, storage and disposal of toxic and hazardous wastes.

VARD takes the environmental responsibilities and corporate citizenship seriously. We are highly aware of the environmental effects our activities may cause, and thus we take necessary steps to limit the impact by continuously developing technologies, practices and business opportunities compatible with sustainable development.

We care about the society we are a part of, and we take active responsibility for the future of our community.

Environment

Vard really cares about our community and the environment. We contribute to this through our daily business, in production and, not least, through our products.

SOCIETY

VARD has a long tradition in contributing to the society through funding and activities. We see social contributions as a strength in terms of taking positively part in the social development and showing responsibility towards the societies that we are a part of.

Typical activities supported by VARD are:

  •  Welfare and social development, typically in communities where we are present
  • Education: School projects and scholarships

VARD’s presence and operations in developing countries brings extra awareness to our role in the societies we are a part of. We see social contributions in the local context, considering government systems, laws and ethics as well as specific needs. In particular, we see the important role education and training plays as a method for social development and aid.

For a number of years we have had a strategic cooperation with local schools and universities. We in VARD find it important to develop awareness of who we are and what we do, already from young age. As an example, we sometimes invite kindergartens to our yards. We are also committed to local schools (pupils aged 6-19) where we can facilitate learning processes through involvement in school projects, practical learning situations, apprenticeships and as invited guest speakers/teachers. Sometimes our educational commitments also involve funding.

Together with schools and other educational institutions, we have developed new courses, i.e. within international business and technical subjects. At university/college level, we have developed a master program in cooperation with the University College of Aalesund.

In September 2010, we announced that we co-sponsor a professorship at the University College of Aalesund. The position focus on environmentally responsible business practices and technologies.

Health and Safety

Vard aims to maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards lapses in workplace safety through comprehensive health, safety and environmental (“HSE”) efforts.

ENVIRONMENT

VARD really cares about our community and the environment. We contribute to this through our daily business, in production and, not least, through our products.
All our shipyards hold environmental permits and licenses necessary for our existing operations. Our shipyards log environmental data into our Environmental Performance System on a continuous basis, and thereof publish regular environmental reports.

In recent years, we have implemented and improved the procedure for handling hazardous waste, fuel oil, spill oil and chemicals as well as residue from sandblasting of vessels. Such routines include collecting hazardous wastes and spillage that are sent to specialized waste deposits for recycling.

In addition, the yards have established emergency teams and systems for handling inter alia oil spills and leakages.

With regard to our environmental focus on our products, we constantly monitor and assess key factors in the market for offshore support and specialized vessels. These factors include new environmental standards and regulations, safety regulations and advanced operations – which demand new technological solutions.

HEALTH & SAFETY

VARD aims to maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards lapses in workplace safety through comprehensive health, safety and environmental (“HSE”) efforts.

We believe that all accidents can and should be avoided, whether it’s personal injury, damage to property, or harm to the environment. We work continuously to raise awareness about, and improve, our performance in HSE-related matters.

Our facilities and operations are governed by local laws and regulations related to worker’s health and safety at the workplace. Appropriate precautions are taken to protect employees and others from workplace injuries and harmful exposures to materials that are handled and managed at our facilities.

Our yards have established on-site clinics together with local hospitals, and implemented a voluntary medical insurance programme, in order to help employees recover quicker from personal injuries and maintain a good health condition.

Recently, we have implemented a common reporting system, known as “Synergi“, which encourages our employees to report their observations of any potential safety hazards for prevention purposes as well as other relevant HSE issues.

We believe this system has improved our ability to identify and analyze hazards associated with tools, equipment and work procedures and their trends. In addition, we have implemented an HSE key performance indicator program pursuant to which our yards are required to meticulously record observations on safety-related incidents.
We believe that such reporting and handling of safety observations, and the resulting execution of preventative actions, have proven to be effective tools for reducing and preventing accidents. As the number of recorded safety observations has increased, we have seen an inverse relationship between the number of safety observations and the number of accidents occurring at the yards.

Sponsorships

We are committed to local communities and society at large. We are contributing in local activities and projects aiming to increase welfare, attractiveness and development of societies – through sponsorships.

SPONSORSHIPS

We are committed to local communities and society at large. We are contributing in local activities and projects aiming to increase welfare, attractiveness and development of societies – through sponsorships.
As an example, we participate in student exchange program and through scholarships for students undertaking relevant education and R&D projects. Research related to innovative shipbuilding, new advanced technology and environmental solutions are of particular high interest. Our announced co-funding of a professorship within environment and technology at the University College of Aalesund, exemplifies this.
We also have traditions for sponsoring activities enriching the communities we are a part of. For example, non-governmental organizations within sports, music and other cultural activities, as well as community-related centres and projects, have received financial support from us.
